In his letter on ministry in a digital world, Pope Benedict XVI encouraged priests to use digital media:

Priests are thus challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources (images, videos, animated features, blogs, Web sites) which, alongside traditional means, can open up broad new vistas for dialogue, evangelization and catechesis.

Here are five reasons the pope gives for being active in social media:

  1. Make God present in today’s world
  2. Present the church’s wisdom
  3. Offer new forms of encountering Christ
  4. Help people grow in expectation and hope
  5. Help people draw near to the word of God

What is your experience? Are there other reasons for pastors to be active in social media? What about other parish leaders and volunteers?

  1. Nick Wagner Nick Wagner says:

Michael Hyatt lists five reasons CEOs should blog. Do you think these would apply to pastors and pastoral leaders as well?

    1. Raise your organization’s visibility.
    2. Articulate your organization’s vision.
    3. Network with people who can help you.
    4. Be alert to what your constituents are saying.
    5. Mentor the next generation of leaders.
  2. Not every priest will be equally adept at this task but for those who like to write, are good at it and can sustain the blogging habit, blogging should be encouraged. It’s a great way to stay in touch, invite people into deeper participation in their parish and spiritual life, and improve communication on important elements of parish life and faith. This may be most helpful for seniors and “shut ins” who increasingly rely on the web for a sense of community as well as information.
